Chapter Six:  No Guilt Trips             There is no doubt that a person with breast cancer is a victim of a dreaded disease. You'd think that would be enough insult, injury, sadness, sorrow, depression all by itself wouldn't you? But if my situation is at all typical, family, friends, and even strangers in their efforts to be supportive, can unintentionally add guilt on a cancer victim who is already struggling with her own thoughts that perhaps she caused the cancer.             Since finding the lump, I have felt a certain peace about having cancer. Somehow, I can honestly say it's okay that I got breast cancer. I have learned and am learning much. It has been an advanced degree from a prestigious university. Don't misunderstand. I would not have enrolled voluntarily, and in feeling peace, I am not saying that I am giving up. Chapter Eight:  Therapies             This chapter is dedicated to ideas and therapies that saw me through the dark days when negative thoughts and energy levels—emotional, spiritual, and intellectual—bottomed out and when the fight seemed too up hill. Join and Participate Therapy             A month into my diagnosis, my doctor-brother, Russ, called and told me about an upcoming seminar—Life After Breast Cancer. He asked me if I’d heard of it and if I were planning to go. Yes, I had received a notice in the mail; no, I wasn’t planning on going. “Why?” he asked. Chapter Thirteen:  Important and Discouraging How many books have you read that begin with Chapter 13? I assume this is probably the first. And although I am not superstitious, the fact that this is number thirteen did not escape my attention. Chronologically this chapter should be next to last in the book, but I am putting it first to make an important and discouraging point about the treatment I received for my particular diagnosis of breast cancer In April of 2015, I noticed a slight thickening in my reconstructed breast at the topside of the breast near the breastbone. I knew it was statistically possible to get a local recurrence in a reconstructed breast since surgeons estimate they only get 97-99 percent of the breast tissue when they do a mastectomy.
